WBW-40 Humming along...

No new birds to report so Ill share some of the recent hummer shots I managed to get...They are very busy getting fattened up for the long journey in about 45 or so days...we have many young ones feeding along with the adults....stay tuned all the way to the bottom for a bonus shot,

I like this shot cause this bird was on sentry duty guarding one of the feeders and she is exercising that long tongue!!!

Here she is again check out the tiny dainty lady feet!  These feet are no good for walking...only for perching!

This is a defensive maneuver...

One of the young...I think a female--but the ruby throat develops slowly...

MY SHUTTER speed was not fast enough to stop the action on the wings but you can see the blur created by this female with her beautiful speckled throat...

This male is showing off his throat-and fanning the tail in warning..Not the best photo --he is so FAST! HE flashed me and then ZOOMED away--

Time to enjoy lots of great birds shared by bird lovers the world over..at World Bird Wednesdays and the Pine River Review..ENJOY
and in the words of Doug Gardner..its not just the photography its the outdoor experience!

Slow Grow?

Did you ever get one of those weekends where its all work and no play? Well thats what this one ended up as-LOTS of grass to cut, stuff to move, plants needing attention, housework, All that Have to--Stuff-yuk...but finally I'm relaxing now!! Noticed a few things...out in the garden...

Last yr this shot (left) of my basil crop was taken in mid to late June, The plants were not big but they bloomed assuring my seed for next yr. This yr I planted the basil EARLY started it indoors..
Its growing
But its not
blooming yet
AND I didnt save Seeds for next yr!!!

The tomatoes are getting big but taking so long to get ripe!

and my pepper plants
have plenty of leaf,
bloom, and yet only little pea sized peppers!

THE CUCUMBER
IS SMALL

THE DILL WENT
TO SEED

                                THE ONIONS?

THE STRAWBERRIES
DRIED UP ON THE
STEM

AND THE FIG TREE

all seem to be growing at a slower pace..I didnt do anything differently than I normally do..Last yr this fig tree was eaten by deer so it didnt quite recover--

This was amusing...one of the new female hummers feeding on the other side of the bottle...can you see her?

And look who is up to his old tricks..Watching me do all the work while he does all the relaxing!! He really has the life of Riley!!

And this Female American Goldfinch stopped to pay us a visit this weekend...In summer we dont generally get these finches but I guess she was passing through...and needed a drink of water!

How's your summer going so far?

WBW-31 Everybody in the Pool-

The Gene Pool that is--

ITS been so freakin hot I havent done any birding--unless its right outside my window before or after work... I found this brand spanking new Northern Mockingbird in the parking lot before work one morning -- he was out in the wide open whilst his mother was in a nearby tree screaming at him...and Im sure she was saying, "you're supposed to be flying away from people,"...but he/she didnt move while I circled and *CLICK*
...Love the cute speckled breast on this youngster--

...the Carolina Wrens of my WBW-30 blog post hatched this week (all 5)...The parents are very busy bringing food to the nest...NO Photos of the young yet they are way too small and weak for me to stress..SO these photos of the parents are taken through the kitchen window looking back toward the deck and the french doors, thats why you see curtains BEHIND the plant where the nest is located.  IF I try to shoot through that window directly behind the nesting area they spook...I am going to remove that FOCUS grabbing pine needle first chance I get tho--;O~

Anybody want a Spider

And here is the other parent coming in with a worm---

And we welcomed a new female ruby throated hummingbird--she's all out on her own learning the ropes--
...a very fresh {off the nest} Carolina Girl!

WBW-22 EYE SEE!

I havent been very lucky in hitting the mark lately with my birding--went dashing through the woods following the black n white warbler only to get caught up in some black berry bushes and got some nice cuts and scratches for my trouble..Meanwhile I heard the "Here I am -Where Are You" repeated song of the red eyed vireo...but he was wayyy up in the canopy-- then the RIDICULOUSLY loud call of the White Eyed Vireo came booming out of the trees like a low rider retrofitted with oversized ghetto blasters and he was CLOSE BY--- AND I got his picture--amazing how this smll bird can have such a loud and crisp call...I had to lighten the photo quite a bit using curves and gamma in painstshop pro due to harsh backlighting--so its not so sharp--

YOU can see why he has that White Eyed Vireo name--

... he has a bug in his beak?

AND its official all of my summer breeders have arrived...here is the ruby throated hummingbird...this was shot through the window she has a white patch on her head...

a couple of my other summer favs like Summer Tanager  and the Great Crested Flycatchers are here for the nesting season...so I hope to get some new shots of them as the season marches on!

bit of birding trivia: a group of vireos is referred to as a CALL OF VIREOS!
