This weeks happenings...

Summer has arrived! Seems like it has been here a while we had 5 days over 100 degrees.  Later we did have a couple of Wonderful days with high in the 80's low humidity and bluebird skies...the perfect weather we all wish for but rarely get!

Prairie Warbler against the blue bird sky...

Eastern Kingbird against the blue bird sky

Summer Tanager against the Blue BIRD Sky...

Blue Grosbeak against the Blue Bird Sky

We had a going away picnic and flotilla for my sis who has been here for the past 6 months...she is now back at her home in the Rocky Mountain State.  It was a fun day

The water was perfect on this hot sunny day!  We had eats and the dogs came along, and we had our floats! Poor man's kayak....it was a fun day!

That night we had
the Strawberry Moon when it was almost to the point of Full
...the sky was Indigo Blue!

..all the sounds of the night imagine if you will; the chirp of frogs, the singing of crickets, the distant
whippoorwill surrounded by the stillness that only a summer night like this one can bring!

My second sister is now here doing her part to help mom out...and so we are enjoying birding together.  We left the radius and went up to the Racetrack one of the county hotspots...we saw 19 species, including  7 cattle egret, 50 rock dove, 6 Mississippi Kites and 1 Swallow-tailed Kite!

A life bird for sis...a county bird for me!

It was also a first sighting for this HotSpot...and only the 5th for the county since the beginning of time according to ebird... So it was fun to see it with my sis!  We were thrilled!

That's about it for this week.

Meeker

This is the last of my scheduled posts...I don't know where I will be on the 18th I may be HOME....when this posts, today in RT is 9/13..but I wanted to share my ride up to Meeker, on 9/11.   I stayed up late to get this done while I have internet access.

This day I took Hwy 13 north to Meeker.

roadside views

Moon peeks over the ridge

A rock window.

I stopped at the mostly famous City Park.  BOY if you've been here before you will hardly recognize the place as they are in the middle of refurbishing it.  They allow camping in the this park, mostly it's tent spaces but they have one full hook ups spot...it's pretty popular so don't count on it being available.

They have paved the parking lot, and put in this nice River Walk sidewalk with a diagram of the Flat Top Scenic Byway on it. Pretty cool!

The river is the White River.  Elk hunting and trout fishing is really a big deal here so they sort of cater to the "sportsman".

Had my picnic lunch here...

I saw lots of Barn Swallows in the picnic area...

And one Eastern Kingbird! More grey in color than the ones back home..

I took a walk up the hill by the river...

I drove out Hwy 8 towards Buford, my intended destination Avery Lakes but I turned around in Sleepy Cat...

By these 2 ponds...when I heard the thunder and saw the lightening in the distance where I had been heading, I decided to stop...because the road was a dirt road and if it rains, MY van will not cut it...
It can pour down in one area and the other stay dry as a bone...

I had these 2 beautiful ponds all to myself to explore so that is what I did...

At the end of this pond is an old Beaver's Lodge....

you can just see it in the distance on the right upper of this photo...I saw movement pretty far off on the other side of the ponds in these trees...if you look really close you see 2 white dots on tree tops!

With a lot of trying finally got the zoom to move and got the following shots...

Tree number one, and farther down the line tree number two...was a little closer to me so a little better shot.  I imagine this is a  mated pair.

a little preening...

So that was awesome to see..

I continued to back track and stopped at the information kiosk I had missed on the way up...they have some nice informative plaques of the history of this Valley here...but I got the story firsthand...

I had passed this Shepherd's wagon in town...and snapped a photo of it on the street.

and when I pulled into the Information pull off there was the same truck with wagon on back so I struck up a conversation with the couple, a rancher and wife last name Livingston.  They have been in Colorado all their lives.  He told me about how John C Fremont was the cause of the Ute Indian uprising that is memorialized not far out of town
(my post on the Yellow Jacket Pass and the Memorial here)

You see the Ute had horses and they had a race track, Fremont was a religious man and felt the racing was not a good use of time they should be farmers, so he had the track plowed up to be used for farms and that started the whole dang thing!!
Mr Livingston's father was a sheep rancher and this old shepherd's wagon has been in the family a long time they had it refurbished and it was used in the Meeker Trails a yearly sheep herding competition they had this past weekend...so they were picking it up to take back home...A very interesting couple.  AND what did I hear?? MY hunch was right----> Sandhill Cranes in the fields, they call this the Meeker Pastures..

Already on the migratory route probably will end up at Bosque del Apache NWR down in New Mexico. I counted about 40 birds here pretty far away...and they may have come from the Platte River in Nebraska where they breed, and the plains of other states to the North of Colorado.  I spotted Cranes west of this spot 2 years ago when I was on my way to Oregon..so that was my hunch, that they would be in this area.

...and wouldn't you know that rain circled around and got me on the way home,

But it was nearly finished when I hit it so no problems...

I stopped at the Bookcliffs Art Center in Rifle, saw this new mural has been put up I agree with this 100%

Never stop dreaming!

...and never stop believing in your dreams...

So where will I be next??

McFaddin and Sabine Woods

My last day at Sea Rim was Saturday and I had 2 places to visit all lined up.  Just down the road was McFaddin WLR.   I took a drive down to see what I might find.  Its a nice drive around a lake and some channels, then you gotta turn around...Once again due to the road that was not replaced when Hurricane Ike destroyed it.

There is some open grass, some canals and
salt marsh too, its wet  I'm sure it dries later in the summer.  There were many Sea Side Sparrows out there hiding and singing in that grass...I got a few horrible photos but I'll share one anyways...the camera couldn't focus with all that grass waving around...

and just as crazy is the Marsh Wren they never sit still...
here's a little video of the wren so you can hear the call

           the marsh wren

Saw a few great blue herons, some great egrets, snowy egrets, and Green Herons...

...below is a Savannah Sparrow

At the end of the drive where you have to run around there was a tug pushing a barge up the canal.

On the way to Sabine Woods from here you have to pass road 69, it is the area of Sea Rim Park where you can rent boats and there is a good sized parking lot there...I stopped to eat a lunch and found this guy sitting right in the middle of an empty parking lot!

Also camping on the beach was a  fellow from MN for a couple nights and he had ABA stickers all over his Hyundai Fit and little bird statues glued to his dashboard.  A little bit eccentric but it's all good.  SO he and I viewed a similar bird in the grass at Sea Rim he told me they are lesser nighthawk, I wanted it to be the common paruaque but he said no, so I trust his knowledge.  Lesser was a lifer for me anyway!!

And here is the one we viewed together...

I stood too close to his mate and he zoomed me... what a sound he made...very loud earth shattering almost. I guess different lighting is the reason for the difference in color this one was in later evening light.

In that same parking lot is this NOAA weather monitoring station, pretty cool to see.

and a red winged blackbird perched on the tower...

After lunch I drove about 10 miles down the road to the Sabine Woods, I stopped by here on Friday but the bugs were so bad I left...so I wanted to return.

Great big trees in the woodlot, and at the back an open field, they charge $5 for non members..its a self pay station..

There is one pond on the property and it attracts birds and mosquitoes.

There's lots of plants, insects, trees, nice trails, and some benches here and there to rest, they put out some trickle water features to entice birds to land for you to get a photo...I didn't have much luck, I should have come here first...

lots of flowers to attract pollinators too...

Here is a skipper on a blanket flower as I call this plant....all these plants are native to this area.  like the Cherokee Rose.

All the birders gathered at the water to wait for the warblers....

What we saw was this yellow crowned night heron try to swallow a turtle! He finally gave up but he whacked that turtle pretty hard...I had to leave I didn't want to see the turtle get hurt.

A grey catbird wanted a drink but he stayed hid in the thicket...

This Eastern Kingbird came right out in the open getting down to business gathering some nesting material.

I walked out of the woods to the field and back towards the entrance is a big mulberry tree, I saw a few orchard orioles fly in and out both males and females, and then one guy said there is a Cape May Warbler in the tree...took me forever to find him but finally I did...

Summer Tanager

Not a new bird for me, as warblers are plentiful in the Carolina's but it was sweet to get this photo.

I was hot and sweaty and tired so I went back to Sea Rim to get my van settled in for the last time there...

another Neotropical Cormorant.

Looking across the marsh to my spot for the night on the beach....so lovely.

Sunday was a day of driving to get relocated...and I'll pick up there on the next blog.
