Winter visits us...

This  week started and will end with an ice storm it was nasty cold and took my electricity away for most of last Sunday...during that time I just sat by the fireplace feeding it the last of my chopped wood...

No fun what so ever...The days prior to that had been sunny but had an icy cold wind ...made the best of it, by getting outside...and finding a Savannah Sparrow at the McBee WMA.

This little cloud obscured the sun for a few minutes.  Amazing how dark it got!

Its hard enough trying to pick these Chipping Sparrows out the twigs without taking the light away too...LoL

I ran into some interesting birds in Quaker Cemetery, this young Yellow Bellied Sapsucker was busy drilling holes in this tree.

On the open grassy area is perfect the Killdeer they froze in place

There was a keen eyed Cooper's Hawk near the exit, he spotted me....

My Peach Tree was in full flower...

But after the deep freezing it got I have little hope for it...

Tuesday was a nice day on this week so I hit some of my "patches" and I had a good day out...and these are some of the birds I found!  This guy was in a tree on a shortcut road I take to get from one area of Lake Wateree to the State Park.

I had to stop and snap a photo of this young Red Tailed Hawk,

This Pied-Billed Grebe was diving but popping up pretty fast out of the cold water...

Meanwhile in the forest....
birds were searching for goodies on the ground...they recently cut some trees and I think berries fell out of those trees and the birds were on the ground and having a lot of luck too.

The Red Bellied Woodpecker found what looks like a Cedar Berry

The Tufted Titmouse found a bigger berry..

The Pine Warbler looked for insects under the cones on the ground

A Great Blue Heron hunkered down on the lakes edge...

The shadows grew long so I headed home...

This Loggerheaded Shrike, was the last bird of the day just a couple blocks from home..

by the posting time of this blog,  we expect more ICE! BOOOooooo.

This little video of the water is just 42 seconds of relaxation...enjoy!

PEACE
Every day is a new Adventure.

  1. Hi Sondra, a cold spell here too. No electricity but luckily you have a fire place and some wood. If the East coast of America gets a cold spell then very often we get a smaller version a few days later. The one good thing about this time of year is that what birds are around are often easier to spot.
How's the van going now no more problems I hope. All the best.

    1. Hi Dave the van is going pretty good right now *knock on wood* Our little girl Floss is having a hard time right now just dealing with being old n worn out so not much travel going on. Yes I def used my fireplace and IM sitting her freezing now wondering should I light the fire or save it in case the electric goes off again I have not laid in a lot of wood enough for a couple days. I hope your weather has warmed but it's not expected to warm up here for another week so we shall see! Have a good weekend.

  2. Hello Sondra,
Wonderful variety of birds, I love the Sapsucker, Shrike and the Pine Warbler.
Great captures of the Hawks, Woodpecker and the Heron. Your video of the lake water looks so peaceful. I hope your trees survive the ice. It is very cold here, in the teens. Take care and stay warm! Have a happy weekend!

  3. That ice on the tree looked like some cold weather stuff. Hope your wood holds out. This winter has been strange. We are in the 30's over night and 60's for the days highs. And they say it will last for another week.
At least you had a good day and were able to get out and take some great pictures. Stay warm and hope they are wrong about your weather and it warms up.

  7. Good you took advantage of the nice days in between the nasty ones. It's been cold (for here) lately -- we've actually had to have the furnace on . But we're lucky compared to everyone else. Your bird pictures are wonderful.

    1. Hi Travis, hope your week has been a good one, winter has really paid us a visit this January, normally we don't get a lot of cold days all strung together, it's been a different kind of year so far.
