All Natural...

I'm now a reluctant Flickr pro account owner, but it didn't go smoothly, I will say their customer service was immediately there to help me when I accidentally purchased pro on the Brand "NEW" account I had made just to host my blog photos, and not the one that holds the 20,000+ collection of photos! They refunded me right away, and I got it straight.

Been having some naturally occurring issues  lately here on the homestead...and I'll share it.   These are some Leyland Cypress trees my mom and I planted about 8 yrs ago.  They grew really well...

We planted them between our homes to give privacy even when it's your mom you want some privacy and vice versa...they are filling in very well, the good thing about these trees is they don't lose needles, they stay green year round, and the provide cover for birds.  They grow really fast too!

But the ones we put up by her driveway have not fared too well at all check this out...These have been mutilated again and again...

We planted the driveway trees at the same time.  Here is a new Holly I planted about one year ago it has tripled in size and is doing well...the deer never bother the Holly, and they don't seem to bother the little Eastern Red  Cedars much either..

As you can see from these photos its foggy, rainy, and gloomy this weekend...can't get outside much so I'm inside editing video I shot over the past couple weeks...I put this clip together...hope you will enjoy watching it.  These clips were shot through my windows of the pasture it's a playground!

  1. I think that parent and offspring especially need privacy from each other.

    1. Yep My mom moved onto my land, there was a lot of trees between us but various storms thinned that area out so the planting has helped to put up some privacy. Now of course my mom has to have one of us with her at all times since she is 94.

  2. What a shame and it doesn't take much for them to jump the fence. I had gotten excited about these Leyland Cypress since I can get cheap land up in the White Mountains but not in the forest area, so was thinking about these trees. But there are plenty deer and also elk. But it is still a thought if I can come up with a way to keep the critters at bay

    1. A talll fence is the only way to stop them they do a lot of damage but we co-exist with them and just try to repair the damage they do. Land up in the mountains maybe just the ticket for you Jo, cooler tempts in summer. Once the trees get bigger they don't bother them, because they like to put their head down and push against the tree so a bigger tree doesn't work well for that.

  3. The cypress trees really stand out at this time of year and I bet its good to see some greenery. Nice vid of the white tailed deer and even though you shot it through glass its still very clear. Now you're into videoing you'll have to do some regular tours of the homestead so that we can see the seasonal changes.

    1. They are def a bright spot. I would have gone with Easter Red Cedar all around, but at the time I couldn't get any! So that's why we went with the cypress. Yes now it's all leaves everywhere I don't bother to rake it up till spring.

  4. Hello, I do love the evergreen trees and plants. The Cypress are pretty. It is a shame the deer are doing so much damage. I like seeing the deer though, great video.
Happy Sunday, enjoy your day and new week ahead.

    1. The trees have been free of any disease and there is no insect troubles, just the deer and they are creating the privacy we wanted.

    1. Hi Pam...I thought of putting lights on the trees but i'd have to do it up on a ladder so that put me off..lol The deer are always in and out of the pasture and the yard, they have their paths all over the place. I would like to put out some corn for them.

  7. Aw man. Glad you still enjoy the deer despite the issues! I have the same love/hate relationship with our bunnies.

  8. I like all your outdoor Christmas trees , it’s too bad they appeal to the deer too! But that’s what they do. Eat. Just like all of us. I’m sure you do have a love/hate relationship .... I used to love taking pictures of them when we had our RV at the lake in Oregon, but I’ll never forget the neighbor lady who tried to grow roses and was in constant battle with deer. One day she sort of lectured me about enjoying the deer! As if it were my fault they came into our Campground.

    1. LoL,,,how dare you invite deer in..lol...well in my case I can at least blame the males!!(Buck Bashing) It's part of the "rut" that makes them do this...I guess the new antlers itch! BUT I did give up trying to have a garden. From now on it's all container gardening right by the house. I took the fence down and called it quits!

  9. The trees are beautiful! We had a deer take out one of our Staghorn Sumacs this year, but we know it will readily resprout...it looked like a buck rubbed his antlers on this plant. They don't touch the Red Cedars here in anyway and they grow so fast, are so perfect in shape, smell so wonderful and offer refuge for birds so we are thrilled with them. Happy holidays to you online friend!

    1. HI Jennifer, yes they are rubbing the antlers in prep for the rut or due to the itch of growing in I presume...but there is little I can do if they grow a little bigger they may survive. Sorry about your Sumac hopefully it will survive.
