Canaveral National Seashore

... before I headed off to Big Cypress from Merritt Island it's very close to Kennedy Space Center and the Canaveral National Seashore so I headed up to see it.  There is a south and north entrance so this is at the south entrance...

It was quite a blustery day as Winnie the Pooh would say...so most birds were laying low!!  It is quite strange on the map given to me there was not one icon on it for restrooms, or picnic area on the south end...yet it turned out there was not one but 13 pit toilets and one very large covered picnic area!! Duh.

the National Seashore Canaveral, FL

The wind had the waves spraying all over the place..

a large flock of Royal terns tried to keep from being blown away...and the wind was cold too...brrr

they had the punk hair do going on...

immature

a couple Ruddy Turnstones made an appearance along the surf...

and 3 willets all standing on one leg....just chillin'

on the way back I stopped at Merritt Island VC to get my passport stamped, and they have a short boardwalk hike...

I saw an armadillo searching for grubs along the edge of the boardwalk...I saw about a dozen along the roadside too...all Alive and well!!

I think they're adorable...

and this guy...

It has been fun to see Brown and White Pelicans alongside each other in the FL waters...

and another Spoonbill was in the canal when I left my campground this morning!!

They are so pretty with a face only a mother could love..

speaking of which its my son's birthday on the 11th Happy Birthday Son....sorry your card will be a wee bit late!! Wish you were here with me...

  1. I never realised that armadillos lived in the southern states,I thought they were just South American. Always good to learn.

    1. Yes they are actually spreading across the entire southern US...we even have them in the lower counties of SC.

We hit 86 today and I thought lets go to the mountains, then I saw the weather and the temps are in the 20's I settled down some after that. LOL

  3. Oh nice! Your pictures are just great (like I said last time, maybe I'll just post a link to your blog instead of bothering to put my feeble efforts.) . I agree that the spoonbills are prettier from a distance -- but with that color, who cares if they have a beautiful face!

It is pretty good to see that many live armadillos. Someone told me that they carry diseases, but I don't intend to pat them anyway.

    1. Well I just saw your gorgeous sky photos!! Awesome shots...I think the armadillo is so cute, they are oblivious to the world around them.

  4. Some great birds there Sondra, especially those Royal Terns.
The Spoonbill is so very different to the ones we get here. A plain face, and all white. Still have the spoon shaped bill though.
    Fascinating.
