What About Wood Ducks?

They are quite handsome!   One thing to look for on the female is the large whitish ring around the eye...and a blue  band of color on the wing...The wood duck lives and nests here in SC so I have had a few opps to see them...but not always getting a good photo--these are my favs of the ones I do have-the first is a scan of an old photo--the rest are more recent.

These ducks are cavity nesters and if you have a wetland or pond of your own Wood Duck Nest Boxes would be a great way to attract them-

  2. Great images and the water is as colorful and beautiful as are the ducks. I find they like to hide in the shadows making it hard for me to get good images.

  7. Beautiful photos of a very colorful bird. It's funny that there are so many birds around the world with the same common name but quite different birds. Wood Ducks in Australia are not at all like the one you have photographed.

  13. Still the most interesting looking bird around these parts, in my humble opinion. If I had a pond, I'd build a nest box for them in a heart beat.

  14. Love your photos. The males have to be prettier, because females are smarter! (My opinion, anyway...)

You should be pleased that my post was not about the "Southern Blue-eared Glossy-Starling" - now thats a long name!

  19. Great shots of a beautiful duck. Most years a pair or two stop over at our small pond before moving on to better accommodations.

  21. Great shots of the Wood Duck drake Sondra. He is indeed a handsome bird. The female is just as beautiful in a more subtle way in my opinion. I never get tired of watching these beautiful ducks whenever I get the chance.
